a small box buried by a large oak tree, from a nameless village located halfway up a mountain. maybe it’s best to let the past go?

The first track is the day version. It’s set at 12pm Mid-day, around spring time. The sun is shining, and everyone is laughing and having fun. Everybody seems to be really coming together as a community.

Submerged Suburb from ‘Submarine Simulator’. People haven’t lived here in ten thousand years or so but the fish are friendly enough. Suburbs are a result of modern transportation but alliteration is fun.

What can you do when the freaking saviors of the world come by to visit? The best that the village can do for the autumn festival is to get a father and his kid playing old dusty guitars to welcome them home.

My idea was to compose background music for a small but thriving farming town on the sea. The inhabitants are peaceful and hardworking, and the atmosphere is light. The town is one the player comes across early in the game, and has been spared from the evil ravaging much of the world.

I had some goals going into this and I think I failed at them for a couple of reasons. One is I wasn’t able to do one of the resolutions in the song in the way I had in mind when it came time to put the song together. I had two parts written, but I wasn’t sure how I was going to transition between them until I sat down at my DAW to record. The resolution I wanted to do for one part didn’t lead into the other part of the song very well, so instead I took the easy way out and just mashed the two parts of the song together. Oh well. The other reason is I was specifically trying to write background music, and I think that what I wrote calls attention to itself too much. It turns out background music is hard. Who knew? Anyway, it was a fun and interesting experience, and I’m happy to have participated.

While exploring City Forest, you come across a stretch of evergreen woodlands, untouched by the metropolis in the trees around it. You take just a moment to rest before you have to push on, for your quest is not yet done.

It’s been a long eventful season and the day has finally arrived to harvest. You step outside with a spring in your step, ready to wrap up yet another successful operation. A cozy Autumn of happy feasts await!

The third track is the carnival version. It’s set during a very big celebration event, a festival to be exact. Everyone is dressed up in colourful costumes, celebrating the formation of the island 30 years ago. The music is loud, the community has provided a table of food for everyone, and people are showcasing themselves in very bright and colourful costumes. Everyone is having a ball.

Here ya go! I actually wasn’t sure if I was going to get around to this but then I got inspired by a 1980’s opera motif and here ya go. Ha.

My song is about the passion of supporting local businesses, we thrive as a community when we come together and ethically source our goods and services.

My initial idea was to make something fun and quirky so naturally I wound up making the exact opposite of that. After another attempt that was more in line with that interpretation I eventually came around to liking this more as unconventional as it first seemed. In either case I thought the inhabitants of this village would be somehow odd but with this theme I’m imaging some meta commentary on the unusually static weather which isn’t actually unusual in video games, maybe an interesting juxtaposition of amusing NPC interactions against a somber atmosphere.

This city is as bustling as you’ll ever get, despite it never rising above freezing temperatures.

I really wish I had taken the time to do more of this. I was studying my reference material and found so many little details and techniques that I wanted to borrow but couldn’t because time.

Lesson learned.

The second track is the night version. It’s set at 9pm night-time, also around spring time. The colourful lights are on, there is a campfire in the middle, and everyone is snuggled very cosily around it. Everyone feels relaxed and contempt.

A track describing a small, peaceful town in the middle of nowhere. In the offbeat neighborhood of Hacot, the watchful town guard makes sure that trouble stays out of the way.

The fourth and last track is the winter version. It’s set during the winter season, on the 20th December, a couple days before Christmas. The snow has fallen, causing a big white blanket throughout the town. The community Christmas tree is up, and everyone is out wrapped in winter clothing. Young ones are building snowmen, and older-ones are exchanging gifts and pleasantries. Everyone is really feeling the spirit of Christmas.

Piano bits are lifted from a cassette of music my dad wrote in the 90s. I’ve been trying to incorporate stuff he wrote in projects wherever I can since he never got to get back into composing before he died. Additionally, my daw kept crashing as I worked, so this track is recovering old recordings and was getting rebuilt in and of itself, much like a settlement which was destroyed and has moments of tranquil calm during the restoration. Literal ghosts in this track.
